18 killed in separate attacks in Benue state

- Fresh attacks launched on communities in Benue state has led to the killings of 18 people

- Several people were also injured and houses were razed to the ground

- Residents are reportedly leaving the communities after the attacks

Several attacks launched on communities in Kwande and Otukpo local government areas of Benue state by suspected herdsmen and cultists have reportedly led to the death of 18 people while several others sustained injuries.

The attacks were reportedly launched by herdsmen and cultists. While herdsmen’ attack killed ten people in Kwande, cult groups clash claimed eight in Otukpo local government.

Nigerian Tribune reports that residents in the community and neighboring communities in Kwande were said to be leaving after the attacks.

Some gunmen belived to be herdsmen attacked Tseadough, a village in Mbachom, Yaav Ward of Kwande, around 2am on Sunday, June 3,and ten persons were killed during the attack. The herdsmen also injured six people, burnt down houses and also abducted a woman from the village.

A member of the community said: "The suspected fulani herdsmen invaded our village in the wee hours of today, (Sunday) while people were asleep, it was there gun shots that woke some of us."

However, the community chairman, said only seven persons have been confirmed dead. The chairman, Terdo Nyor Kenti said: "Some herdsmen stormed the village at about midnight while the people were asleep and opened fire and shot sporadically in all directions.

“Seven people were killed in the end, six others were injured while the herdsmen also went away with a woman after burning several houses in the area."

Kenti said there was no problem or provocation from the villagers that could have warranted the attack and wondered why the attackers would just come and swoop on his people.

Meanwhile, cult groups in the early hours of Sunday, June 3, while some were going to their place of worship, took over the ancient town of Otukpo and unleashed terror. No fewer than eight people were mauled down at different places within the town.

Legit.ng earlier reported that a traditional ruler in Benue was killed by some gunmen at the GRA area of Katsina-Ala town in the middle belt state.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 26 when the assailants shot dead Godwin Tor Geri Gbajur, a market chief in Katsina-Ala local government area of the state.

The gunmen were said to have stormed the GRA residence of the chief on a motorcycle at about 6:30am and demanded to see him.
