Guardiola set to be punished by UEFA after confronting referee

- Guardiola charged with improper conduct as he confronted the referee

- Leroy Sane's goal was wrongly ruled offside to give Man City a two-goal lead

- Liverpool have also been charged with crowd disturbances in the first leg

Pep Guardiola has been charged with improper conduct after being sent to the stands in Manchester City's loss to Liverpool.

The Spaniard was dismissed at the end of the first half after entering the pitch to confront referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz.

Guardiola insisted he did not insult Lahoz during the angry exchange after the match.

“I was polite, I was correct, but Mateu Lahoz is a special guy, he likes to be different, he likes to be special.

“I know what happened in Monaco last season so he is a referee whenever people see the things, he will see the opposite. It’s too much to send me off because I didn’t say any wrong words."

The ex-Bayen Munich coach was furious his side were denied a second goal after Leroy Sane's strike had been incorrectly ruled out for offside," he said.

Guardiola had to watch from the stands in the second period as he watched his side get knocked out of the Champions League.

The former Barcelona gaffer has been charged with improper conduct by UEFA with his case set to be heard on May 31.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have also been charged with violent conduct after setting off fireworks and throwing objects during the Etihad clash just like last week's first leg.

UEFA had already opened disciplinary proceedings against the Reds after the attack on City's team coach before the first leg at Anfield.

The other charges after the first match at Anfield last Wednesday were acts of damage and crowd disturbances before hours before kick-off.
