In Nigeria, when it comes to food, there are certain unspoken rules and regulations which one must adhere to. You just know they exist but you do not know why.

Growing up, your parents may have told you that you cannot eat with your left hand but they never have a good reason why it so wrong.

1. Eating with your left hand is a taboo

If you have ever been slapped for eating with your left hand, you would understand that doing anything with your left hand, especially eating is a NO NO. Do not eat with your left hand, do not write with your left hand, do not receive things with your left. In Nigeria, you are not to do anything in this life with your left hand. So, you have to eat with your right hand and if you do so with your left, the kind of looks you get from people will give you reasons to think twice.

2. Women always cook the foods

There is this saying that a woman’s place is in the kitchen. It is an unofficial food rule that women are responsible for preparing the food in Nigeria. The man’s duty is to help in the eating. He may help out if he feels like.

3. You should eat rice every Sunday

4. You cannot serve a visitor or elderly person only a piece of meat

Nigerians love their meat and some see serving an older person with a piece of meat as being disrespectful. Why is it so wrong to give an older person one piece of meat?

5. You cannot pick meat or fish before someone older

This applies to when two or more people are eating together. The younger person is expected to wait for the older person to pick meat or fish first. Also, if a younger goes to pick meat from the pit, he or she is expected to pick the smallest piece and leave the big chunks for the older people.

You can serve other meals but jollof rice MUST be available. It is like a taboo for jollof rice not to be present at any Nigerian function.

7. You have to say thank you to all the people present after you finish your meal

It does not matter whether you bought the food yourself and the older people had no hand in its provision, you must say thank you to them when you are done eating.
