The expansions allowed for more slots for each confederation, with Africa getting nine automatic slots, potentially rising to 10 via the intercontinental playoffs.
According to CAF, the continent produced all 10 slots, including DR Congo, which qualified after beating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final.
Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Cape Verde and South Africa have initially qualified automatically after the completion of the group stage in October 2025.
Africa, despite having 10 slots from the previous five, saw some heavyweights miss out of the tournament, including Nigeria and Cameroon, who have eight AFCON trophies between them.
Legit.ng looks at the top six African countries that failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, based on FIFA ranking.
Top African countries that missed 2026 WC
1. Nigeria
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are the highest-ranked African nation to miss out on the 2026 World Cup. Nigeria is ranked 26th in the world and third in Africa.
The three-time African champions had multiple opportunities, but failed in all. FIFA docked South Africa three points, Eritrea’s withdrawal rule change, amongst others, but all to no avail.
NFF currently has a case at the Court of Arbitration for Sports after FIFA dismissed their petition over the ineligibility of some DR Congo stars, and remains hopeful.
2. Cameroon
Five-time African champions, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, finished second in Group D behind Cape Verde, but secured a playoff spot as one of the best second-placed teams.
Cameroon lost in the semi-final of the playoff to the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0, thus ending their run. The Leopards also defeated Nigeria on their way to qualification.
3. Mali
Mali is ranked 10th in Africa and 54th in the world, but failed to qualify for the Mundial after not making it out of the group stage. Mali finished third in Group I with 18 points from 10 matches. Ghana qualified in their group.
4. Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso is ranked 12th in Africa and 62nd in the world. As it was in the AFCON 2013 final, Nigeria scored one over their West African counterparts by clinching that playoff spot on goal difference, despite having 21 points, only behind Egypt in Group A.

5. Guinea
The Syli Stars are ranked 15th in Africa and 80th in the world. They had a dismal group campaign, finishing fourth in Group B behind Algeria, Uganda and Mozambique, far from qualifying for the tournament.
6. Gabon
The Panthers of Gabon had a great group campaign, only bettered by the winners of some other groups, finishing with 25 points to book a playoff spot.
They went to the length with Nigeria in the semi-final of the playoff, before the Eagles proved their class to defeat the Central Africans 4-1 after extra time, thus ending Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s quest for a World Cup appearance.
FIFA sends message to DR Congo
