FCT, Abuja - The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has vowed to proceed with its planned convention ahead of the 2027 elections.

Legit.ng reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, warned the ADC against proceeding with its congresses and convention.

Amupitan warned that proceeding with the convention could violate existing court orders.

ADC rejected Amupitan’s claim that the commission is acting within the confines of a “multi-party constitutional order”.

The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the ADC has demonstrated its commitment to conducting its processes in strict accordance with its constitution and the Electoral Act.

Breaking: INEC issues fresh warning ADC as party crisis continues, "Your election may be invalidated"

This was contained in a statement issued via his X handle @BolajiADC on Friday, April 3, 2026.

Abdullahi said Amupitan’s warning “amounts to speculation and cannot serve as a legal basis to restrict lawful party activities.”

“The ADC reiterates that its right to organize congresses and hold its national convention is constitutionally guaranteed and has not been lawfully suspended by any court. The interpretation advanced by the INEC Chairman stretches judicial directives beyond their meaning and risks setting a dangerous precedent where regulatory caution becomes a tool for democratic suppression.”

Nigerians react as ADC dares INEC

@vmesole

Bolaji's interpretation of "status quo ante bellum " shows that ADC is shooting itself & want to keep shifting blame to APC. It is not too late for you people to negotiate with Nafiu Bala or decamp.

@omoafe

Based on the documents from this post, Justice Nwite in Sept 2025 refused Nafiu Bala's demand to declare him the National Chairman, instead he asked David Mark to come and prove to him that Nafiu is wrong.... That seems like a reasonable judgement.

ADC should face reality in solving and correcting its own political miscalculations. Blaming INEC, President Tununbu, or APC are unviable options, as evidence of legal lacunae in the set foundation of ADC leadership scheme is obvious. Mostly in politics, one is the author of one's own fate.

@ada_lionx

When a government starts looking for ways to weaken opposition instead of proving its performance, you already know the game is up. You can’t silence hardship, you can’t hide reality, and you definitely can’t bully your way into legitimacy. Nigerians are watching.

INEC’s position appears more aligned with political interests than with the impartial application of law, raising serious questions about its commitment to fairness and equity in Nigeria’s electoral system.
