Police Arrest ‘Fake Politician’ Over N300m Political Appointment Scam on Top Kwara Businessman

Ilorin, Kwara state - The Kwara state Police Command has arrested one Adeola Badru for allegedly defrauding a prominent businessman, Joseph Olugbenga, of N300 million.

The commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the arrest while briefing journalists in Ilorin on Friday, September 5, The Cable reported.
Police speak on activity of 'fake politician'
Ojo noted that the suspect had posed as a seasoned politician with strong political ties.
He added that the 'fake politician' also promised to facilitate Olugbenga’s appointment to the South West Development Commission (SWDC).
“Based on trust, the complainant released, in tranches, the sum of N300 million to the suspect, believing his promise to secure him the appointment,” Ojo stated.
Police: Victim left stranded after payments
The police commissioner explained that after receiving the full payment, Badru abruptly cut off contact with his victim.
“Subsequently, the suspect blocked all communication channels, preventing the complainant from reaching him,” Ojo said.
Police track suspect to Oyo state hideout
According to Ojo, operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acted swiftly after receiving a petition from the victim, the Nation reported.
“Upon receipt of the petition, operatives of the CID swung into action and traced the suspect to his hideout in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he was arrested,” he explained.
Ojo further revealed that the suspect had voluntarily confessed during interrogation.

“The command is carrying out further investigation, and at the conclusion of our findings, the suspect will be duly charged in court,” he added.

The Kwara command urged the public to exercise caution and avoid individuals who parade themselves as political powerbrokers.
“No genuine appointment process requires such payments,” Ojo warned, stressing that fraudulent claims of political connections are becoming a growing concern.
Police summon El-Rufai, ADC strong chieftains
Previously, Legit.ng reported that the immediate past governor of Kaduna state, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, had been summoned by the Kaduna state police command.
He was summoned alongside key members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna. According to a letter sighted by Daily Trust, they were invited for questioning over alleged criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.
The letter dated September 4, 2025, was signed by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Uzainu Abdullahi. When contacted, the ADC North-West Vice Chairman, Jafaru Sani, whose name was also listed, told Daily Trust that most of them got to know of the invitation through social media.
