The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced plans to decentralise recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from 2025, giving state recruitment desk officers a greater role in the process.
PSC spokesperson Mr Ikechukwu Ani disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, following a stakeholders’ meeting with representatives from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

State officers to play bigger role in recruitment
According to the statement, the new approach is designed to eliminate the sharp practices that have plagued past exercises and to make the system more transparent and inclusive.
“All relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Federal Character Commission, will have access to the recruitment portal.
“This will help prevent corruption and nepotism, ensuring that the process is fair and credible," Ani explained.
New portal to enhance transparency
The PSC confirmed that its newly developed recruitment portal, which will be used for hiring both Commission staff and all categories of police officers, is now ready for deployment.
The platform will serve as the central hub for applications, with state-level recruitment officers taking an active role in managing the process.
The portal will be opened once the 2025 recruitment officially begins.
Stakeholder collaboration a key factor
The statement recalled that, for the first time, the PSC held a consultative meeting with state recruitment officers, described as “the primary beneficiaries of the process”, to agree on measures to improve efficiency, accountability, and equity in police recruitment.
PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), expressed optimism about the new arrangement.
“We are delighted to be partnering directly with the state desk officers to ensure that everyone’s interest is protected. This is a significant step towards building a recruitment system that Nigerians can trust," he said.
