The Federal Government has intensified efforts to cushion the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal with the rollout of the Renewed Hope Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme, a nationwide initiative targeting 15 million vulnerable households.
Under the scheme, each eligible household is set to receive a total of ₦75,000, disbursed in three tranches of ₦25,000.

The programme is designed to provide immediate financial relief while helping low-income families navigate rising living costs.
As of March 2026, more than 9 million households have already received the first tranche, marking significant progress in one of Nigeria’s largest direct social intervention programmes.
Structured payments to ease financial pressure
A key feature of the initiative is its phased payment system, which spreads the ₦75,000 support across three instalments.
This structure ensures that beneficiaries receive sustained assistance over time rather than a one-off payout.
The staggered payments are expected to help households better manage essential expenses such as food, transportation, and basic healthcare, especially in the wake of inflationary pressures triggered by subsidy removal.
Targeting 15 million households nationwide
The programme aims to reach 15 million households across the country, with the costs of Nigerians living below the poverty line.
By directing funds to the most vulnerable, the government hopes to reduce economic hardship and improve household welfare on a broad scale.
Officials say the initiative is not just about short-term relief but also about creating a foundation for long-term poverty reduction through targeted social investment, according to a statement from the scheme's official website.
Digital Payments and Transparent Verification
To ensure efficiency and transparency, payments are made directly to beneficiaries through verified bank accounts.
In many cases, accounts linked to National Identification Number (NIN) or Bank Verification Number (BVN) are used to streamline the process.
Enrollment and verification are carried out through agencies such as the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO) and the National Social Investment Management System (NASIMS), which maintain the national social register.
This digital-first approach reduces the risk of fraud and ensures that funds reach the intended recipients without unnecessary delays.
The government pushes to reduce poverty
The Renewed Hope CCT programme is being implemented under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, as part of broader efforts to tackle poverty and support economic inclusion.
Authorities describe the initiative as a critical intervention at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with rising living costs.
By injecting cash directly into households, the programme is also expected to stimulate local economies, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
Progress so far and what lies ahead
With over 9.17 million households already reached, the government is moving steadily toward its 15 million target.
The next phases of disbursement will determine how effectively the programme can sustain its momentum and expand coverage.
For millions of Nigerians, the cash transfers represent more than just financial aid. They offer a temporary buffer against economic shocks and a measure of stability during uncertain times.
