Fatal stabbing of Belgian officer raises security questions
Belgian authorities faced questions Friday over how a convict on a terrorism watch list was able to stab a police officer to death, hours after making threats and demanding psychiatric treatment. Vincent Gilles, head of the police union SLFP, demanded to know why the suspect had been allowed to leave the hospital even after making threats.
Chad says more than 620 arrests in protests
More than 620 people, including dozens of minors, have been arrested in Chad, the public prosecutor said Friday, after anti-regime protests that left at least 50 dead. According to rights groups, dozens more people were killed during and since the protests across several cities.

The head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said Friday that his organisation had started training civilians in Russian regions bordering Ukraine to form a militia and build fortifications.

Ukraine said on Friday its forces were entering the southern city of Kherson and hailed an "important victory" after Russia announced its troops had retreated from the only regional capital it has captured after nearly nine months fighting.
UN unveils satellite-based system to spot methane
The UN unveiled on Friday a satellite-based system to detect methane emissions as part of efforts to cut down on the major contributor to global warming. MARS will use data from global mapping satellites to detect methane "hot spots" and large plumes of the gas, and identify its source, the UN Environment Programme said in a statement.
Burkina's new parliament opens after coup
Burkina Faso's new legislative assembly opened on Friday with a call for self-sacrifice by the 71 members appointed by the junta that seized power a month ago. A dozen members of the last parliament were among those appointed, including Abdoulaye Soma, who ran for president in 2020, and 41-year-old law professor Ousmane Bougouma, who was elected speaker on Friday.
