Pandemoniun At Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos, Over Reported Explosion

The ever-busy Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos, was shaken by a powerful explosion close to Folawiyo fuel depot in the night of June 25, 2014, Wednesday.

According to Vanguard, the blast occurred abound 8.30pm. At least four buildings, including two banks, were damaged by the explosion.

The exact number of causalities is yet to be specified. First reported number of people killed by the blast is four.

An eyewitness, who introduced himself as Musa Ali, revealed that he had narrowly escaped death during the blast:

It has been gathered that a Mercedes-Benz 190 exploded right after parking beside a fuel tanker, which was on its way to Folawiyo tank farm. Fire fighters quickly raced to the scene and after some minutes the fire was put off. A deep hole was seen at the scene of the incident. See more pictures of the aftermath of the explosion below:

It would be added that the residents of Apapa were shocked by the development, as they thought the dreaded Boko Haram sect was attacking the area. 

A spokesperson of the Lagos police, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the blast, but stated clearly that it was not a bomb explosion. She also added that more details of tanker blast would be provided later, during a briefing by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Apapa.

NEMA official gives comments on the incident

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) informed that the root of the blast and fire was a gas cylinder explosion.

PremiumTimes has contacted NEMA spokesperson, South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye, who was able to add new details to the story. According to him, people were reportedly filling gas into the cylinder before it exploded at 26, off Creek Road, Apapa, around 9.15pm.

The spokesperson did not say anything about the casualty figure.
