I Will no Longer Announce Killing by Killer Herdsmen, Nigerian Governor says

- Governor Samuel Ortom has shared his next move concerning deaths as a result of attacks by armed herders

- According to Ortom, he would not be declaring those killed by herdsmen in the state

- The governor has also urged residents in Benue state to defend themselves from being killed

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue on Sunday, May 23, said he will no longer announce the deaths of those killed by herdsmen in the state, The Nation reports.

Ortom, who made the remark at the Chapel of Grace in Government House, Makurdi, to round up a prayer and fasting programme said the people of Benue should rise up and defend themselves with weapons not prohibited by law.

The governor speaking further at the interdenominational church service urged residents to get a licence for dane guns from local government chairmen and use them to defend themselves.

He went on to note that as long as he remained within God’s circle no weapon fashioned against him would prosper.

This development is coming almost a week after Ortom urged residents of the state to defend themselves against armed invaders in their domain.

Ortom made the remark while reacting to questions from journalists on his arrival to Makurdi from Oyo state where he attended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum meeting.

He said people need to rise up against the unnecessary invasion of their homes. Commenting on the PDP governors' meeting, he disclosed that the forum has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to give attention to security.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Benue government, on Thursday, May 6, approved the establishment of vigilante groups to combat the high rate of insecurity in the state.

Governor Ortom disclosed this when he briefed journalists attached to his office on the outcome of the expanded stakeholders’ meeting held at the new banquet hall of the Government House, Makurdi.

He said renewed attacks on the people by armed herdsmen had overstretched security agencies, stressing that his government had decided to enforce the law to establish vigilante groups.
