- FG has declared that no student would be allowed to register for UTME without NIN
- The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, made this known in Abuja on Thursday, January 21
- Adamu maintain that JAMB has been mandated to work with NIMC on how to achieve it
The Nigerian government has said that the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) is now a mandatory requirement for registration for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by candidates.
Nigerian Tribune reports that this was disclosed in Abuja on Thursday, January 21, by the minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu, during the 2020 ministerial press briefing.
Legit.ng gathered that he ordered the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), to work out modalities with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for implementation.
The report said the board had attempted the introduction of the policy two years ago but failed because of the low level of enrolment for the National Identity Cards by Nigerians.
“The use of the National Identity Number (NIN) for JAMB registration by candidates is now a government policy.
“JAMB is working closely with the National Identity Management Commission, to ensure the sustainability of this policy and eliminate multiple registrations."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that amid the February deadline for the network subscribers to link their Subscribers Identification Module (SIM) cards to their National Identity Number (NIN), some Nigerians expressed concerns.
It was reported that some NIN enrollees on Wednesday, January 20, reports that they said the federal government is insensitive about the registration especially at the time when cases of COVID-19 continue to increase on daily basis.
A student of the University of Lagos, Leonard Shofoluwe, said he loves SIM blocking to risking his life, saying that although it is a right move on the part of the government, the timing is wrong due to the spike in the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
Shofoluwe said it would be a fruitless venture if the SIMs of millions of Nigerians are blocked while advising that the government postpone the exercise indefinitely.
