COVID-19 lockdown: Cross River begins payment of N30,000 to youths

- Cross River state the state government has begun disbursing the monthly payment of 30,000 stipends to beneficiaries of the youth employment programme

In order to cushion the effect of COVID-19 lockdown on poor residents of Cross River state, the state government has begun disbursing the monthly payment of 30,000 stipends to youths in the state.

Inyang Asibong, the commissioner for international development cooperation in the state, disclosed that the distribution commenced on Monday, April 21, to beneficiaries of the Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO), Channels TV reports.

The commissioner said the aim is to assist the vulnerable during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic to meet their needs.

He said the payment was approved for beneficiaries who are engaged in community services such as sanitation, clearing of gutters, erosion control among others.

Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom state government has concluded modalities to embark on mass testing of its citizens for coronavirus. The decision is due to the spike in the number of confirmed cases in the state in recent times.

As at Sunday, April 19, Akwa Ibom state had recorded 8 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Addressing newsmen on the same day, the chairman COVID-19 committee and secretary to the state government Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem noted that voluntary aggressive testing has become imperative in Akwa Ibom.

According to him, without ascertaining the level to which the masses have been impacted by the coronavirus, it would not be possible to relax the lockdown, which he said has just been extended by one week.

The committee chairman recalled that right from when the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the state, the committee has been embarking on serious contact tracing which he said has helped forestall community transmission.

In another report, two leading Non-Governmental Organizations, Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF) and Connected Development (CODE) on Saturday, April 18 collaborated to distribute foodstuff to locals in Wumba community, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

Over 2,000 residents in the FCT suburb benefitted from the palliatives by the organisations as the lockdown announced by President Muhammadu Buhari continues.

The convener of NYPF, Moses Siloko Siasia and the chief executive officer of CODE, Mallam Hamzat Lawal, told journalists present at the event that the initiative was sponsored by young Nigerians across the country.
