A former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has said that without the Igbos Nigeria as a nation would not be complete and that the absence of the tribe’s hard work and brains would have made the country poorer.

According to The Guardian, Gowon made the revelation on Thursday, March 5, while addressing a debate on “National Unity: Federal Character, Restructuring and Rotation of Presidential Power in Nigeria” organised by Igbo Leadership Development Foundation in Abuja.

The ex-military leader who spoke through Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), insisted that the ethnic group placed in Nigeria by God wasn't a mistake.

In another report by Vanguard, the retired general stated that the Igbo nation had been marginalised in Nigeria’s polity and called for the adoption of appropriate measures to improve the pains of the Igbo.

He went on to note that in a democracy, there must be fairness, justice, and transparency in the leadership and governance of a country.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Gowon begged God to forgive Nigeria over its national sins and the multifaceted problems confronting the country.

The former head of state made the plea on Sunday, February 23, at an interdenominational service organised by Nigeria Prays, in the north-east zone.

He said Nigerians need to overcome the bloodshed, kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, herder-farmer clashes and other challenges faced by the country. The former head of state advised Nigerians to confess all sins committed against one another sin before God.

In a related development, President Muhammadu Buhari has been accused of marginalising the southwest geopolitical region of Nigeria in terms of appointments into public offices. The allegation was made on Tuesday, January 28, by the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams.

The Aare alleged while speaking in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti state during the 6th world congress of the Oodua Progressives Union (OPU), that Buhari’s government is tainted with nepotism.
