With regard the coronavirus, President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a message of solidarity and goodwill to the People's Republic of China as it battles with the devastating spread of coronavirus.
In a message to the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, President Buhari on Sunday, February 2, said that Nigeria is ready to lend a hand of support to the Asian nation through this trying time, Vanguard reports.
The president commends China for doing its best, through global collaboration, to contain the economic and sociopolitical effects of the epidemic both nationally and internationally.
Recalling that China has been of immense help to Nigeria and Africa in general both in recent times and in the past, the president said that it is very imperative for the nation to make it known that it is willing to offer any help to Chinese citizens.
The Nigerian leader prayed that God will see the Asian country through its ordeal and condones with families across the world that have lost ones to the disease.
Moreover, the president expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their hospitable spirit and gesture to Chinese nationals in the country and for not stigmatising them due to the virus.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the federal government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), had reacted to claims of the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country.
The NCDC said that such viral reports and rumours were both false and unfounded and therefore called on Nigerians to completely disregard such.
The agency, however, admitted that there was a Chinese man who was put under close observation after his return from China recently but was confirmed free from the disease with none of the known symptoms.
The NCDC, in a statement released on Sunday, February 2, said: “The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is aware of ongoing rumours of the importation of the Coronavirus to Nigeria."
It also said that to detect the spread of the disease, a laboratory testing platform has already been established in the country.
Moreover, the NCDC cautioned Nigerians to pay close attention to the public health advisory on the epidemic in the country, adding that travellers from China can immediately report to its communication centre if they so wish.
