Nnimmo Bassey: Nigerian environment activist bags doctoral award

- Nnimmo Bassey, a Nigerian architect and poet, has been honoured with a doctoral degree from University of York in United Kingdom

- The Nigerian activist was honoured with all other international sensations like Irwin Jacob, Ronald Kplan and Rong Zhang

- Other awards the Nigerian has received are but not limited to Time Magazine's Heroes of the Environment and Rafto Prize

Nnimmo Bassey, a Nigerian architect and environmental rights activist, author and poet, has got an honorary doctoral degree from the University of York, United Kingdom.

The Guardian reports that the celebrated Nigerian was one of the 16 global world-shakers like Irwin Jacob, Ronald Kaplan of Stanford University, Economist Dani Rodrik and Rong Zhang, the president of Xiamen University, China.

Others who were celebrated alongside the Nigerian poet are entertainment personalities like Mark Addy of Game of Thrones, Ray Mears, and the children book’s author, Michael Morpurgo.

Bassey in 1958, was the chair of the Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) for four years which ended in 2012, and was the executive director of Environmental Rights Action for two decades.

It should be noted also that the Nigerian was in 2009 named among others as Time Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment and in 2012, got the prestigious Rafto Prize.

Reacting to the honour Bassey got, Chima Willoams, the head of ERA in Benin state, said the award is well-deserved going by his efforts towards Nigeria and global environmental issues.

In another report by Legit.ng, another Nigerian Alexander Ezenagu got his doctorate degree from a Canadian law school, McGill Law in Montreal.

Before his new feats, Alexander had got two first class honours from the University of Lagos and the Nigerian Law School.

Added to those lofty academic feats is the masters he got in law from Cambridge University. His PhD was done in the area of tax law.
