Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Bayer 04 Leverkusen traces its origins to 1904, when employees of the pharmaceutical company Bayer AG established the Turn-modernisation- und Spielverein der Farbenfabriken vorm. Friedr. Bayer & Co. The football department was formed in 1907. The club's nickname, "Die Werkself" (The Factory Team), reflects its industrial roots.
Rise to the Bundesliga
After decades in the lower divisions, Bayer Leverkusen achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 1979 and has remained in Germany's top flight since. The club's first major European success came in 1988 with a UEFA Cup victory, followed by a DFB-Pokal win in 1993.
Consistent contenders and European ventures
Leverkusen has been a consistent presence in European competitions, including a UEFA Champions League final appearance in 2002. Despite multiple runner-up finishes in the Bundesliga, the club has maintained a reputation for attractive, attacking football.
Historic 2023–24 season
Under head coach Xabi Alonso, appointed in October 2022, Leverkusen experienced a historic 2023–24 season. The team secured its first Bundesliga title, finishing the season unbeaten—a first in Bundesliga history. Additionally, they won the DFB-Pokal, achieving a domestic double. The club also set a European record with a 51-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.
BayArena: A modern football venue
Leverkusen's home ground, the BayArena, boasts a capacity of 30,210 and is known for its proximity to the pitch, offering fans an intimate matchday experience. The stadium underwent significant modernization starting in 2007, enhancing comfort and facilities.
