Despite intense speculation, Atalanta stood firm and refused to sanction a move, insisting the 27-year-old winger was too important to let go for cheap.
The former Leicester City and Everton forward returned to action last weekend as a late substitute in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Torino.
Now, the Bergamo club is reportedly ready to offer a significant pay rise to the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year winner that includes a clause to allow a future exit under the right circumstances, Yahoo Sports reports.
With his current deal running until 2027, Atalanta wants to remove any uncertainty about Lookman’s future by offering fresh terms that keep him motivated and secure.
Atalanta plan ahead with Lookman
Since joining Atalanta, Lookman has been nothing short of prolific for the Italian club.
In just 119 appearances, the Super Eagles forward has scored 52 goals and provided 25 assists, including 20 goals last season alone.
According to This Day, Atalanta's plan is to reward that consistency with an improved salary package while also respecting Lookman’s ambition to test himself at an even bigger club in the future.
The inclusion of a special clause in his deal is seen as a way to balance the player’s career goals with the club’s need for stability.
Lookman focuses on full fitness
Atalanta head coach Ivan Juric confirmed in his pre-match press conference before the Juventus game that Lookman is close to full fitness after a slightly delayed start to the season.
“He’s training well, and we will slowly try to get him back to full strength,” Juric said.
Lookman’s immediate focus will be to hit peak form ahead of Nigeria’s crucial World Cup qualifiers in October as the Super Eagles gear up to face Lesotho and Benin in a bid to rescue their hopes of qualifying for the tournament.

With his importance to both club and country, Atalanta are keen to ensure his future is settled quickly so that he can concentrate on performing on the pitch.
Lookman’s new deal, once signed, will signal Atalanta’s intent to compete at the top level in Serie A while building around their star players.
