  • Arsenal and other clubs have closely tracked his rise, but he cannot join the English Premier League club until he turns 18

English Premier League club Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign an exciting midfielder in a transfer which is expected to constitute an Irish record.

The Gunners are poised to bolster their squad amid injuries to key players Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.

Saka could be out of action for four weeks as he is expected to miss their blockbuster fixture against Liverpool this Sunday.

The 27-year-old limped off with a left hamstring injury during the Gunners’ 5-0 rout of Leeds United on Saturday.

Although head coach Mikel Arteta had suggested it was a “significant” issue, scans have since eased concerns, confirming a less severe injury.

Meanwhile, club captain Odegaard picked up a shoulder problem after landing awkwardly on his shoulder, per Football London.

Speaking after the game, the manager said:

"That's the negative. Martin felt something in his shoulder; we will have to scan that tomorrow.
"Bukayo felt something in his hamstring when he was running with the ball. We will have to speak to tomorrow with the doctors. So just wait."

On the squad depth, the tactician added:

"Well, you just have to see the evolution and the way the team played the number of minutes in 2023/24. Last year, it was different with the amount of injuries."

In search of a midfielder ahead of the close of the summer transfer window, the Gunners have looked towards Victor Ozhianvuna.

It was gathered that the 16-year-old midfielder, who is playing first-team football for Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland’s Premier Division, is set to sign a pre-contract with the English club.

The Nigeria-eligible star will move to Emirates outfit in January 2027 when he turns 18 in a fee expected to exceed the £1.6million Tottenham paid for Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic earlier this year.

Who is Victor Ozhianvuna?

The lad is a talented right-footed midfielder who often plays on the left, and he has already passed his medical, with the deal potentially finalising at any moment, Daily Mail reports.

Several clubs, including Arsenal, have closely monitored his development from Shamrock Rovers’ youth setup to the first team.

As an EU citizen, he cannot join Arsenal until he is 18, but the club trusts Shamrock Rovers’ growing reputation for youth development to oversee his progress for the next 16 months.
