Lionel Messi made a special tribute to his mentor and former boss Diego Maradona during Barcelona's 4-0 win over Osasuna in La Liga.

Maradona spent two seasons at the Camp Nou before joining Napoli in 1984 and two years later he won the 1986 World Cup with Argentina.

The football icon passed away in midweek and Messi paid a special tribute to the world's greatest player.

After scoring Barca's fourth goal, the 33-year-old removed his shirt to reveal the Newell's Old Boys jersey with the No.10 printed on it.

Messi dribbled past two defenders before chipping the goalkeeper to score his first goal from open play.

Maradona played for Newell's Old Boys before drawing the curtains in his career while Messi started his career with the club.

Messi pointed to the sky in honour of the Argentine legend who the world believe the pair have similar style of play.

The referee booked Messi for taking off his shirt but the Barcelona forward was full of smiles after he was cautioned.

Messi made a post on social media in midweek:

“A very sad day for all Argentines and for football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.
“I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”
