Anambra Governorship Election: CSOs Score NSCDC High on Conduct During Polls

FCT, Abuja - A coalition of civil society and non-governmental organisations have commended the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and its leadership for the professional conduct of its officers and men deployed to Anambra for governorship election in the state on Saturday, November 6.

The coalition under the aegis of Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Transparency and Accountability, noted that officers and men of the NSCDC engaged with voters, other security agents, and citizens in the state with dignity, mutual respect, and proficiency.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, November 7, the spokesperson for the coalition, Comrade Sunday Attah, particularly commended the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi, for his top-to-bottom exemplary leadership style.

He noted that NSCDC boss puts professionalism, dedication to service and sacrifice at the forefront of his vision since assuming office.

Attah who led a team of CSOs to monitor the election, noted that:

“With the preliminary reports so far received from our officials on election monitoring and observation assignment in Anambra, we are satisfied with officers and men of the Corps on ground in Anambra.
“We recall that, during a situational assessment visit to Anambra state ahead of the election, Dr Audi made it clear to his 20,000-strong NSCDC operatives deployed for the election to 'observe the highest level of professionalism, civility, decorum and respect for the rights of all voters coming out to exercise their franchise in order to elect the next governor for the state.'

“It is heartwarming, therefore, to note that the warning did not fall on deaf ears as men of the Corps conducted themselves at the realm of professionalism throughout the election day.”

Legit.ng gathered that the coalition comprises of several other sister organisations including the Stand Up Nigeria Movement, Save Humanity Advocacy Centre, Nigeria Unite Against Corruption, Voice for Change Congress and Arewa Youths Federation.

Preliminary findings on the Anambra governorship election

Recall that another civil society organisation, Yiaga Africa had earlier released their preliminary findings on the election.

The report which was sent to Legit.ng after voting ended in most areas in the state, was based on verified reports received from 229 of 248 sampled polling units as at 4 pm on election day.

In addition, sixty-six critical incident reports were received and sent to journalists.

Yiaga Africa had earlier accused politicians of inducing voters with gift items and monetary gifts before the election.

The group disclosed this at a press briefing attended by a Legit.ng reporter in Awka on Friday, November 6.

Reading the summary of findings from Yiaga Africa's pre-election observation, its executive director, Samson Itodo, said some citizens were being compromised by collecting fabrics and a token of N1,500 each.
