A marriage counsellor and member of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Debby Airebanmen-Jedege, has slammed people over their reaction to the announcement by its General Superintendent, Pastor William Kumuyi.

Kumuyi made modifications to two of the church’s long-standing marriage rules during the 2025 Global Family and Marriage Conference, monitored by Legit.ng on Sunday, August 31.

During his sermon, he lifted the six-month courtship rule and the courtship visits ban, adding that a lady can visit her intended husband, but must be accompanied by an elder.

She questioned netizens for their banters over what Kumiyi said, stating that some people wanted to tarnish his image.

Debby said in her post:

“Why are people crying over Baba's message? Shouldn't you visit the family of the person you want to marry before? Do you need someone to tell you? Did he say you should sleep over at the brother's house? What's the rave about?
“How do you go to the altar to exchange marriage vows with someone you don't know their people? Abeg, make una free my Papa jare! Some of you are just looking for means to tarnish his image. God no go gree for una.”

Another member who reacted to the modifications hailed Pastor Kumuyi, stating that he had clarified an issue which disturbed youths in the church.

Kumuyi sends powerful message to marriage commitee

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Pastor Kumuyi has warned Deeper Life’s marriage committee against rigid rules, stressing that such practices are pushing members away.

He clarified that the marriage committee is a church creation for guidance, not a biblical institution, and should not exercise undue authority.
