UAE Shares What Foreigners With Residency Permit Need to Know Before Sponsoring Family

  • The UAE government has set clear age limits for foreign residents who wish to sponsor their children in the country
  • Sons can be sponsored at a certain minimum age, while unmarried daughters face no upper age restriction under current UAE rules
  • A specific exception exists for sons who are actively studying within the United Arab Emirate

The UAE government has highlighted the rules governing how expatriate residents can sponsor their children to live in the country, with separate conditions applying to sons and daughters.

According to official information published online, a foreigner with a residence permit may sponsor unmarried daughters regardless of their age. Sons, however, can only be sponsored until age 18 under standard arrangements.

UAE: Exception for sons in full-time education

One notable provision applies to male dependants who turn 18 while still studying. If a son is enrolled in a recognised educational institution within the UAE after reaching adulthood, his father can continue to sponsor him, provided proof of enrolment is submitted to the relevant authorities. This means the sponsorship is not automatically terminated at 18 for sons who remain in school or university in the country.

The UAE government said:

"An expatriate resident can sponsor unmarried daughters up to any age and sons up to 18 years. If a son is studying in the UAE after the age of 18, the father can continue to sponsor him if evidence of their studies in the UAE is supplied."

The rules reflect the broader framework the UAE uses to regulate family residency, ensuring that sponsorship arrangements are tied to specific circumstances rather than left open-ended. For expatriate families, understanding these conditions is essential to maintaining their children's legal residency status.
