How NYSC came to be in Nigeria
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was established on May 22, 1973, by the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon. It was created as a strategic response to the devastating Nigerian Civil War (1967 - 1970) to heal a deeply divided nation at that period.
The scheme was founded on the policy of the "3Rs": Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Reconciliation. It is also known to involve young graduates in nation-building and instill a sense of patriotism and selfless service.
