The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) received a distress call at 5:16am and dispatched its Dolphin Team from the Igando base to the scene, Punch reports.
What Caused the Badagry Expressway Crash
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said in a statement that early investigations pointed to over-speeding and reckless driving by the Camry driver as the cause of the accident.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was caused by over-speeding and reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Camry driver. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane and had a head-on collision with the oncoming Iveco truck," the statement read.
All five occupants of the Camry, described as adult males, died from the impact. Their remains were recovered, bagged with dignity, and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps for further action.
Multi-Agency Response at the Scene
Several emergency and security bodies worked jointly at the crash site, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and police officers from the Morogbo Division.
Two tow trucks were used to remove the wreckage from the expressway. Both vehicles were taken to the Morogbo Police Division, and the road was subsequently reopened to traffic.
Oke-Osanyintolu extended condolences to the families of the five victims. He also called on motorists to abandon dangerous habits such as over-speeding and wrongful overtaking, especially during early morning hours when road conditions can be unpredictable.
He added that LASEMA remained committed to prompt emergency response and inter-agency coordination in line with the Lagos State Government's T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, which focuses on protecting the lives and property of residents across the state.
