Abakaliki, Ebonyi state - Tension gripped Ebonyi State University on Tuesday after violence broke out during the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election, leaving one student shot and hospitalised.

The Ebonyi state Police Command confirmed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

The suspects were apprehended after allegedly firing gunshots to disperse the crowd during the announcement of election results.

Police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, said in a statement obtained by Channels Television:

“The swift response by our operatives on ground led to the arrest of three suspects, and a locally made pistol used in the act was recovered. The suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned upon the conclusion of investigations.”

Eyewitnesses said chaos broke out when the gunshot rang through the gathering. The bullet struck a student, who was immediately rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki for urgent treatment, The cable reported.

The police assured students and the university community that justice would be served.

“We remain committed to ensuring safety and order during and after the electoral process,” Ukandu added.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over insecurity and violence in student politics across Nigerian universities, Channels Television reported.

Gunmen kill final-year student in Akwa Ibom

In another news, Ikot Osurua, popularly called Prince, a student, has been fatally shot by suspected cultists gunmen.

The accident took place on the early Wednesday morning, approximately 1 a.m., January 15, at Abuja Street, Ikot Osurua, where the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic is situated.

Prince, a last-year Higher National Diploma (HND2) Computer Science student in school, is said to have been attacked when he was with his girlfriend.

Legit.ng reported that Prince had just completed his last exams and was busy preparing to submit his project before he was mobilized into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.

LAUTECH student shot dead during sign-out

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported that the murder of a LAUTECH student of Ogbomoso who was shot dead at a sign-out party was confirmed by the police in Oyo state.

The late Babalola Marvelous Ishola was said to have been discovered lifeless by the roadside around 5:38 p.m. on Wednesday. The occurrence was brought into the limelight by celebrated counter-insurgency strategist Zagazola Makama through their official X handle on Thursday. The corpse was discovered on getting a report of a man lying helpless by the roadside, according to sources who were quoted by Makama.

Upon receipt of the alert, they promptly deployed a security team to the scene. The officers could identify the dead man during a search of his belongings. The LAUTECH Dean of Student Affairs later confirmed that Babalola was actually an institution student.
