Tension has risen in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State following the discovery of five bodies along a riverbank in Oreta and the brutal killing of a man in nearby Bayeku.
Both incidents occurred within 24 hours, leaving residents alarmed and fuelling concerns over resurgent cult clashes in the state.

Local accounts said the Bayeku victim was attacked on Tuesday night. His body was found with both wrist and leg severed, sparking speculation about the motive.
Cause of deaths still unknown
A resident who spoke anonymously explained that many in the community doubt the killing was linked to cult activity.
“The person who died is not a known cultist. Many in the community think it is connected to land grabbing. They killed the man and severed his hands and legs,” the resident said.
By Wednesday, residents in Oreta woke to a more chilling discovery. Five corpses were recovered along the riverbank, though the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths remain unclear.
A resident, who identified herself as Adeola, said police officers visited the scene to begin preliminary checks.
“Some people are saying it was the river that brought the five bodies to the riverbank. We don’t know the details. But five bodies were recovered. We don’t believe the water brought them. The cause of death is still unknown,” she said.
Footage shared by a cult-monitoring channel showed at least two of the victims lying lifeless by the riverside. One wore a blue hoodie, facedown on the ground, while another dressed in black-and-white clothing was found with blood stains around the area.
Local authorities release official statement
The executive chairman of Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area, Hammed Aroyewun, later confirmed both incidents in a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Oluwaseun Ajayi.

He condemned the killings, describing them as a direct assault on community peace.
“The incident, which shook the community and heightened fears over safety, drew an immediate response from the Council Chairman.
Aroyewun, accompanied by the council’s Chief Security Officer, members of the Joint Task Force, and other council officials, promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and reassure residents of the government’s firm stance on security,” the statement said.
He vowed that those responsible would be tracked down and punished.
“Our people deserve to live in peace and without fear. This administration will continue to deploy every necessary resource, in close partnership with security agencies, to guarantee safety and restore lasting peace,” he added.
The chairman urged residents to remain calm as security patrols were being stepped up across Baiyeku, Oreta, and adjoining areas.
The latest killings come only days after a separate cult clash claimed three lives during a festival on Lagos Island, where videos captured heavy gunfire between rival gangs.
