Vitel Wireless Limited, the country’s first licensed Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), has formally commenced SIM card distribution, signalling its readiness to challenge established giants like MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile.

Strategic partnership for expansion
The company, which operates under the unique “0712” prefix, is entering a market with over 220 million mobile subscriptions, where competition is defined by pricing, network quality, and customer reach.

At a press conference in Lagos, Vitel’s Managing Director, Chudi Nwabueze, unveiled a strategic alliance with SLOT Systems Limited, one of Nigeria’s most recognisable mobile retail chains.
“Today, we are proud to announce our strategic partnership with SLOT Systems Limited, a household name built on trust, quality, and nationwide reach,” Nwabueze said.
He explained that the collaboration is designed not just to sell SIM cards but also to empower Nigerians with improved mobile access. By leveraging SLOT’s widespread retail outlets, customers will be able to purchase, register, and recharge Vitel SIM cards with ease in their local communities.
Bridging the connectivity gap
According to Nwabueze, the initiative represents a bigger vision: bridging Nigeria’s connectivity gap.
“The collaboration is about more than just distribution; it is about empowering people. It is about bridging the connectivity gap with technology, accessibility, and affordability at the heart of everything we do,” he stated.

He stressed that affordability and seamless access will define Vitel’s business model, making it easier for underserved populations to join the digital economy.
A bold challenge to established operators
Industry analysts note that Vitel’s entry could reshape Nigeria’s telecom dynamics. Unlike traditional network operators, MVNOs lease infrastructure from existing players, enabling them to focus more on customer service, competitive pricing, and niche market solutions.

Vitel receives a number series from NCC
Legit.ng earlier reported that in a historic move, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assigned a mobile number series to Vitel Wireless (Vitel), making it the country's first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).
The assignment of the 0712 mobile number series to Vitel by the NCC represents a major turning point in Nigeria's telecom industry.
This change highlights the nation's increasing adoption of cutting-edge and affordable telecom options.
