T2 said in a statement on Thursday that the multi-million-dollar purchase marks the company's comeback to Nigeria's competitive telecom market. The company recently rebranded, and the deal came more than three weeks after that.
The announcement claims that Huawei would restructure T2's core systems as part of the deal, revealed at a signing ceremony in Lagos, to increase capacity, resilience, and security.
The multi-million-dollar initiative is part of the company's four-phase strategic roadmap for stabilisation, modernisation, transformation, and growth, according to the statement, which did not specify the deal's value.
The telco claims that the strategy intends to make the business competitive again and set it up for long-term growth.
Speaking about the arrangement, T2 CEO Obafemi Banigbe stated that it is a catalyst rather than just a contract.
“Huawei has been a trusted partner throughout our journey, and this next chapter reaffirms our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and excellence,” Banigbe said.
“With Huawei by our side, we’re not just upgrading our network, we’re future-proofing it.”
According to Jiang Junyong, CEO of Huawei's Nigerian carrier division, the company is honored to back T2's daring transformational path.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence,” Junyong said.
“We’re bringing world-class solutions to help T2 build a resilient, high-performance core network that will support next-generation services and long-term growth.”

The telecom company claimed in the statement that the partnership would greatly increase the resilience, capacity, and coverage of its network across the country.
“More importantly, it marks the first of several bold initiatives aimed at restoring the company’s market leadership, revitalizing its service portfolio, and delivering a digital experience that truly resonates with modern Nigerian consumers,” T2 said.
The company added that the core network modernization is expected to reach completion in the coming months, firmly anchoring T2’s resurgence in a fast-moving, tech-driven future.
Journey of Nigeria’s fifth GSM operator
Legit.ng reported that the journey began in 2007 with Etisalat, and then a later rebrand to 9mobile under new investors kept the network alive, but operational challenges persisted, and market share slipped further.
Now, with the unveiling of T2 under majority owner Lighthouse Telecoms, the company is seeking a fresh start, one it hopes will finally turn its turbulent history into a sustainable success story.
