Largest phone market in Kano on fire (photos)

- Reports had it that the largest phone market in Kano state gut fire

- The cause of the big fire accident caused by an electric spark from a converter supplying power to some of the shops in the GSM market

- The fire ravaged the market occurred in the evening of Friday, July 15

- Inferno destroyed no fewer than 44 shops

The popular 'Kasuwar Waya' which is located around Farm Centre area of Kano state is the largest phone market in the state. Fire gutted the GSM market on Friday, July 15.

According to NAN, an eyewitness said the incident happened about 5:30pm when shop owners had closed business.

The eyewitness also said the inferno which destroyed phones and other valuables worth millions of Naira was said to have been caused by a spark from a converter supplying power to some of the shops, adding that no life was lost, but no fewer than 44 shops.

The Kano state director of the Fire Service Alhaji Mustapha Rulwan confirmed the incident.

Rulwan said a total of 44 wooden shops were destroyed by the fire.

The state director said: “We received distress call around 5:20pm and we immediately mobilised our personnel to the area. We were able to put out the fire within 45 minutes.

“It was an inverter that was being used by some of the traders that caused the inferno as most of the affected shops were made of wood and zinc.”

According to a Facebook post by Rariya, it stated that the fire incident occurred late afternoon.

In addition, information had it that men of the Kano state fire fighting service battled the inferno, with security personnel being deployed to the business area in order to forestall looting and stealing of shops.

NAN also learnt that this is the second time Kasuwar Waya is being gutted by fire in the last eight months.
