15 Soldiers Ambushed And Killed By Boko Haram In Borno

No fewer than 15 soldiers were reportedly ambushed and killed on Wednesday, July 9, by Boko Haram militants in Damboa, Borno State.

Yesterday afternoon, about 200 soldiers were said to have been sent on an operation to recapture Damboa military base which was taken over by the insurgents some days back.

According to a security source who spoke to Sahara Reporters on condition of anonymity, the insurgents had hoisted their flag on the base and dug a trench where many of their heavily armed gunmen lay in ambush awaiting for the arrival of the soldiers who they knew would be coming to reclaim their base.

The insurgents opened fire on the unsuspecting soldiers as they approached the base, killing no fewer than 15 soldiers, while many others sustained injuries.

"Some of the injured soldiers said that they lost 15 soldiers, but the full extent of those who died is even unclear now," the source said.

The source explained that the atmosphere is tense as the soldiers who sustained injuries have expressed anger that they were sent on such a high-risk operation without enough firepower and troops to tackle the militants.

According to the source when he went MRS Hospital in Maimalari barracks in Maiduguri, it was filled to capacity with injured soldiers. Some of the wounded soldiers were even lying on the bare floor, waiting to receive treatment, as there was lack of space and facilities to accommodate them.

Boko Haram sect members have continued to carry out their massacres in Borno State. It was reported about two days ago that some suspected Boko Haram members dressed in military uniforms attacked a police station and a military camp on Sunday night in Krenuwa village in Marte district of the state.
