Ernest Asuzu, Cicely Tyson, 12 international, local celebs whose deaths shook the world in January 2021

The first month of a hopeful 2021 saw the world lose some of its great personalities who will definitely be missed.

Renowned stars like Cecily Tyson and Larry King were some of the stars to say goodbye.

Nigeria also lost a number of entertainers and their death came as a shock to their fans and followers.

As we continue to face a crisis with the global pandemic, Legit.ng lists the celebs the world has lost in January 2021.

1. Ernest Asuzu

The veteran actor passed away on Tuesday, January 26. The president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria Emeka Rollas confirmed the news of the actor’s death online.

2. DJ Babus

Popular disc jockey, Babatunde Bashir Bello, reportedly died after a battle with COVID-19. He is said to have given up the ghost on January 29, 2021.

3. Jim Lawson Maduike

Maduike was reported to have passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2020. The Imo state actor was said to have complained of body pains shortly before his death around 12 noon.

4. Orisabunmi

Known as Folake Aremu, the report of her demise made the rounds on social media on January 6, 2021. However, the cause of her death was not revealed but it was said that she had died during the night.

5. David Mela

The fast-rising actor reportedly passed away after battling an unknown sickness. According to online reports, Mela left the word during the late hours of Monday, January 11.

6. Dan Nkoloagu

The actor’s son, Dan Nkoloagu Junior, shared the news of his dad’s death in a Facebook post. According to him, the actor left the world on Friday, January 22.

7. Cecily Tyson

The award-winning actress died on Thursday, January 28, at the age of 96.

Her death came barely a week after releasing her first memoir Just As I am which highlighted her lengthy acting career.

8. MF Doom

The iconic masked hip hop legend died aged 49. The deceased was best known for his intricate rhymes and signature mask inspired by the Marvel comic book supervillain Doctor Doom.

9. Larry King

American television host and Emmy award winner Larry King was arguably the biggest loss in the month after passing at the age of 87.

He had earlier been hospitalised after testing positive for COVID-19 but his wife noted what actually killed the star was sepsis.

10. Tanya Roberts

Veteran actress Tanya Roberts passed away at the age of 65. The famous actress reportedly collapsed at her home on Christmas Eve.

Tanya was taken to hospital, put on a ventilator but she never recovered. She died on Sunday, January 3.

11. John Reily

The beloved thespian breathed his last at 84 years old. John’s daughter confirmed his death on Sunday, January 10.

12. Randy Parton

Brother to renowned star Dolly Parton, 67-year-old Randy Parton, was a renowned singer and songwriter who had songs topping the charts in Alabama.

Dolly announced his death on January 21.

13. Kenneth Magawe

The actor was reported to have passed away on the night of Saturday, January 30, after he was killed by a group of thugs as he headed back home.

14. Mighty Salim

The Kikuyu musician called Timothy Njuguna passed away a day after hosting his brother Salim Junior's fifth memorial.

Popularly called Mighty Salim, the singer died on Sunday, January 24.

He was diagnosed with diabetes in mid-2003, and with kidney failure, and commenced dialysis in 2018.

In other news, Legit.ng earlier reported that Buhari's aide Tolu Ogunlesi shared the throwback photos of late Cicely Tyson with former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari.

The photos were taken in America in October 1980 when a White House Banquet was hosted in Shagari’s honour.

The actress was said to have read from the former president’s book of poetry titled Wakar Najeriya.
