- Gary Neville wants Liverpool to lift the Premier League title if season is cancelled
- The Reds are currently having an unassailable lead of 25 points above second placed City
- FA chiefs have further suspended the league until April 30, at least
Mancehster United legend Gary Neville has said that if the 2019/2020 English Premier League season is cancelled due to coronavirus, he will give the title to Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are having an unassailable 25 point lead over second placed Manchester City and are just two wins away to clinch the title, but the league has been suspended.
FA chiefs were forced to suspend the league until April 3 after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea player Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for the infection which has now killed over 10,000 people around the world.
Statistics have shown that 3269 people have been infected in the UK and 144 people have died from the ravaging epidemic right there.
And with the continued spread, all 20 clubs in the Premier League had a video conference on Thursday, March 19, and reached a decision to postpone the league further until April 30, at least.
There are concerns that if the pandemic continues even by then, the league might be eventually cancelled and there are concerns about how it will end, as regards who will win the title, which team gets relegated, promotion of teams and so on.
Neville said: "I say give Liverpool the league and I keep sending him the little asterisk sign to say 'Liverpool win the league, BUT…'.
"But it would have to be a doomsday scenario for football not to finish the fixtures from this season."
Right now, Liverpool fans probably wouldn’t care if there was an asterisk next to their first ever title win - as long as they see Jordan Henderson lift it.
Legit.ng earlier reported that former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has claimed that if league leaders are awarded the title without completing the season, there would be chaos. There are about 90 matches left to complete the season with teams having nine games left each.
Redknapp maintains that awarding Liverpool the title in this circumstance will not be fair.
