Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of reaching another Champions League final for the second consecutive season came to an abrupt end in Germany earlier today.

The north London club suffered a 3-0 disappointing defeat to Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig in the second leg of their round of 16 clash at the Red Bull Arena on Tuesday night.

Spurs were however dumped out of the competition 4-0 on aggregate having lost their reverse fixture by a lone goal last month.

Timo Werner salvaged a 1-0 win away at Tottenham in the reverse, leaving the English side with an uphill task of turning tables away in Germany.

Meanwhile, Marcel Sabitzer got the home side off a flying start during the second leg, netting the opener inside 10 minutes of gameplay after being set up by Timo Werner.

The Austrian football star doubled Leipzig's advantage in the 21st minute after meeting a cross to bury the ball past a helpless Hugo Lloris with his head.

The second half of the encounter was a little quiet with a minor action before Leipzig went on to hit a third through Emil Forsberg to put the game beyond the visitors.

The tie, which came in the wake of a turbulent period for Spurs eventually finished 3-0 as the hosts strolled to the last eight of the European showpiece for the first time in their history.

Jose Mourinho's men are yet to win a single match since mid-February, with their last victory coming in a 3-2 win over relegation-threatened Aston Villa back in Sunday, February 16.

The London side now shifts their focus to the Premier League ahead of their meeting with rivals Man United on Sunday, March 15, as they continue their push to finish among the top four teams.
