Entire Russian government resigns ahead of Vladimir Putin’s massive constitutional shake-up

Russia’s entire government has resigned ahead of a massive constitutional shake-up by President Vladimir Putin.

The UK Sun reports that the development was influenced by Putin to carve out a new position of power for himself to stay at the helm after his current term as president ends in 2024.

Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian prime minister announced on Wednesday, 15 January, that on state TV sitting next to Putin. He said he would give the president room to carry out the changes he wants to make to the constitution.

Dmitry Medvedev is understood to be stepping aside to take a role as deputy head of the Russian Security Council to oversee defence and security issues.

Reports suggest that Putin is planning to appoint new members of the government himself, and has asked the outgoing government to continue working until they are in place.

To another news report, the United States' Senate will likely start the impeachment of President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, January 21, weeks after the House of Representatives concluded its own process.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate’s majority leader, spoke about the planned move on Tuesday, January 14.

NBC News reports McConnell as saying, however, that the launch of the impeachment would largely depend on the submission of the two articles upon which the House took an action against Trump.
