Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was no doubt an outstanding player for his Premier League club last campaign.

The Dutchman was key to the Reds' European triumph after beating Tottenham Hotspur to emerge Champions League winners last campaign.

His impressive display has however earned him among the top-ranking top football stars in the world, winning the UEFA best player award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, few months back.

Although, the Barcelona captain was the preferred candidate when the 'FIFA The Best' winner was announced in September.

However, the former Southampton defender has a chance to go head-to-head with other top players in a bid to win another prestigious prize.

Meanwhile, his manager Jurgen Klopp as quoted by the Mirror claims his player deserves to win the award ahead of the two most successful players in terms of the award.

The Argentine forward led Barca to La Liga triumph scoring 36 league goals in just 34 appearances.

Klopp acknowledges Messi's brilliance in the game but insisted that Can Dijk should emerge, winner when the winner is finally announced.

"If you give the Ballon d'Or to the best player of his generation, you give it always to Lionel Messi, that's how it is," Klopp told Reuters.

"If you give it to the best player of last season then it was Virgil van Dijk. I don't know exactly how it will work but that's how I see it.

"If it's for the best player, the best player at all, and of all, then it's Lionel, (but if it is for) best player of last season, (then it's) Virgil. We will see."

Legit.ng earlier reported that Paris Saint-German forward, Kylian Mbappe, has thrown his weight behind Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi 2019 Ballon d'Or award.

The Argentine faces stiff competition from his close rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's center-back Virgil van Dijk ahead of this year's award gala slated for December.

Messi failed to win Champions League but under his enviable tutelage, Barcelona coasted to a big glory with domestic win.
