The minister said farmers and herders need to adopt ranching and technology due to the challenges caused by scarcity of resources, Channels TV reports.

He said: “This is an issue of resources getting more and more scarce. There is less water, there is less grass.”

“The farmers would not have the kind of land they used to have before so they have to adopt the best practices in Agriculture and modern technology.

“On the part of the herders, they must also adopt modern technology such as ranching. These issues are also cultural, as the economic and cultural. You need to persuade the average herdsmen to go to a ranch.”

Mohammed stated that contrary to the believe of herders, cattle reared in ranches are more productive than those that roam.

“For a simple reason, in his (a herdsman) own words, ‘it is not so much about how fat your cow is but how many they are’. A man with 100 herds of cattle is superior in his own mind with a person with 50," he said.

“But it has been proven that a cow on a ranch produces about 10 litres of milk a day while migrating cattle produces about a litre a day.”

Meanwhile, the governor of Zamfara, Abdulaziz Yari, has been chided by the federal government, over the persistent banditry in the state, Daily Trust reports.

During a panel session at the opening of the 67th international press institute congress which was hosted by John Momoh, chief executive officer of Channels TV, the minister of defense, Abdulrahman Dambazzau, accused Yari of abdicating his responsibility as the state's chief security officer.

Legit.ng gathers that Dambazzau chided the governor for not providing ‘good governance’, which he insisted, was the solution to the problems in the state.

According to the minister, Yari would still not be able to tackle the problem, even if he was given all the soldiers in the world.
