Many users claimed that Kirk’s last statement was either “gang violence” or “counting or not counting gang violence?” According to a review conducted by fact-checking outlet Snopes, these claims were accurate.
Snopes analysed multiple video recordings from different angles, capturing Kirk’s final moments on stage.
The footage showed Kirk responding to an attendee’s question about the number of transgender mass shooters in the United States over the past decade. The exchange unfolded as follows:
ATTENDEE: Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?
KIRK: Too many. [Applause]
ATTENDEE: In America, it’s five. Now, five is a lot, right, I’m going to give you — I’m going to give you some credit. Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?
KIRK: Counting or not counting gang violence?
NBC News also released a video capturing Kirk’s final words, ending the footage just before the shooting occurred.
Snopes debunks misinformation
Snopes reiterated its previous findings that claims suggesting transgender individuals are disproportionately represented among mass shooters are unfounded.
The organisation has also investigated past statements attributed to Kirk, including a controversial claim that some deaths by gun violence were “worth it” to preserve Second Amendment rights.
