Tegbe: 100 Days of Modest Achievements Lay Foundation for Power Sector Transformation

Minister of Power, Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has described his first 100 days in office as a period of “diagnosis and stabilisation” with measurable progress towards rebuilding Nigeria’s electricity value chain.

Speaking at an Abuja Media Parley, Tegbe acknowledged that many Nigerians still contend with unreliable electricity and high self-generation costs, stressing that improvements recorded in some areas do not invalidate the experiences of communities yet to benefit.

While acknowledging the progress recorded, the Minister stressed that much more needs to be done to ensure that all Nigerians have access to reliable electricity. He noted that the administration’s focus is not only on improving national generation and transmission figures, but on translating these gains into more consistent supply and a better experience for electricity consumers across the country.

The Ministry’s strategy, he said, rests on three pillars: stabilising the electricity value chain, restoring market discipline and strengthening governance.

Among the milestones recorded was the restoration of the 375MW Alaoji open-cycle power plant after three years offline. New transformers at Apapa, Ijora, Alausa and Lekki unlocked 672MW of transmission capacity, while a 300MVA transformer at Katampe, Abuja, added another 240MW.

Generation and transmission also exceeded 5,000MW over recent weeks, with a peak of 5,330MW recorded during August and September. Tegbe, however, cautioned that national generation figures do not necessarily reflect individual communities’ electricity experience.

On electricity access, 62 solar and mini-grid installations across 30 states delivered about 43.6MW of solar capacity and 41,735 new connections, reaching an estimated 208,000 people.

The government also launched the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) to improve the long-term management of publicly financed renewable-energy assets.

On market reforms, Tegbe said about ₦1.23 trillion had been raised towards addressing the sector’s ₦3.3 trillion debt backlog. About 350,000 meters were installed within the first 100 days, while cumulative installations reached 1,004,260 by August 2026. He also reiterated that the Federal Government has no plan to increase electricity tariffs.

Looking ahead, the Ministry will prioritise deeper grid stabilisation, development of the Transmission Super Grid, improved utilisation of existing assets and infrastructure for future demand.

For Tegbe, the benchmark remains clear: visible, incremental improvement in supply reliability, billing accuracy and customer experience.

The first 100 days may have been modest, but they have laid the groundwork for the larger objective: building a more reliable and sustainable electricity sector capable of powering enterprise, economic growth and everyday Nigerian life.
