FCT, Abuja - Former Kano state governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, is reported to be in high-level talks with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over plans to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Letter to APC secretariat sparks speculation

Multiple sources claimed that Kwankwaso has written to the APC national secretariat in Abuja, signalling his intention to join the ruling party, Daiy Trust reported.
As reported by Vanguard, a senior insider revealed:
“Talks are ongoing between Senator Kwankwaso and the national chairman. Discussions have reached an advanced stage following his engagements with the presidency.”
Kwankwaso releases conditions for joining APC
According to Kano APC insiders, Kwankwaso’s conditions include ensuring that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf secures the APC governorship ticket in 2027, while Kwankwaso himself is assured of a prominent national role.
A source explained:
“He did not submit the letter to the Kano chapter because of his long-standing rivalry with the state leadership. The conditions are with the national secretariat.”
Official response from APC
APC’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, downplayed the reports, insisting they remain speculative.
He said:
“I am not aware of any letter from Kwankwaso. But our doors remain open to anyone willing to accept the party’s progressive values.”
Kano APC holds emergency strategy session

Amid these reports, Kano APC heavyweights, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and former national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, convened in Abuja. They pledged total support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and strategised on reclaiming Kano in 2027.
Dr Ganduje stressed:
“We will work tirelessly to ensure APC’s victory in Kano. President Tinubu has shown us goodwill, and we remain firmly behind him.”
APC vs NNPP: Political implications for 2027 race
An analysts, Hamma Hayatu, believe Kwankwaso’s defection would significantly weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
His strong grassroots base in Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest voting state, is considered critical.
“Kwankwaso joining the APC would tilt the balance of power in the north,” one political commentator said. “It could also reignite speculations about his role in Tinubu’s 2027 ticket.”
