2027 Election: Prominent Senator Dumps Peter Obi's Party, Joins APC as He Shares Reason for Decision

Enugu, Enugu state - Ahead of the 2027 elections, Kelvin Chukwu, the senator representing Enugu East district, has dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

LP is the party of Peter Obi, a prominent presidential candidate in the 2023 election and leader of the 'Obidient' movement.

Kelvin Chukwu defects to APC

As reported by Leadership Newspaper, Chukwu disclosed his political switch on Wednesday, September 24, during a townhall meeting at the village market square.

Legit.ng gathered that the meeting was to brief his constituents on some of his achievements in the red chamber of the national assembly.

The federal lawmaker told his constituents that his decision to quit the LP was informed by the prolonged crisis rocking the party which has led to its division.

Chukwu, who hails from Amuri community in Nkanu West local government area (LGA) of Enugu state, noted that this development has seriously affected the members of the party even as he added that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was equally experiencing crisis.

He declared that he would formally declare for his new party at the floor of the senate when the lawmakers resume in October.

The leadership of the 10th senate recently altered its legislative calendar, shifting the resumption of plenary sittings from Tuesday, September 23, to October 7, 2025. The postponement was conveyed in an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, the chief of staff to the Senate President, and made available to Legit.ng.

Senator Chukwu had during the townhall meeting which was attended by the immediate-past state chairman of the APC, Ben Nwoye, traditional leaders, as well as dignitaries from Enugu East, expressed appreciation to the people for his support since assuming office at the national assembly. He promised not to let them down.

In his reaction, Nwoye, applauded Senator Chukwu for joining the ruling APC.

He described Chukwu's decision as a wise political resolution 'that would be of immense benefit to the lawmaker and his constituents.'

Senator Onyewuchi defects to APC

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Ezenwa Onyewuchi, the senator representing Imo East in the national assembly and a member of the LP, defected to the APC.
