A graduate of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, who lost her father two months before her graduation, has taken her father to his grave on convocation day to honour him. The photos she posted online made many people emotional.

The young lady detailed her experience in the post and mentioned her course, while saying that her father died exactly two months before her convocation from the university.

She wrote as a caption to one of the photos she posted online:

"Graduating exactly 2 months after burying my dad."

Speaking about her course and the years she spent in school in her TikTok video, she wrote:

"My convocation is finally here. So grateful, so proud, so full. I showed up, stayed consistent, and made it to the end. Six years at the University of Lagos, carried by grace, endurance, and perseverance. Convocation came two months after we laid my dad to rest, still standing, still grateful, still choosing hope."

As she finishes her studies at the university after six years, she dedicates her education, or degree, to her late father.

Legit.ng contacted a graduate of the University of Lagos who visited her father’s grave following her convocation, and she shared her experience in an exclusive chat.

Speaking specifically about her graduation and how she felt graduating months after her father’s death, she said:

"For me, my father became my motivation even in his absence. I reminded myself that Legit.ng contacted the graduate of the University of Lagos who visited her father's grave following her convocation from the university, and she shared her experience in an exclusive chat."

"Well, it was very painful, honestly, because it was still fresh. I mean, I was still grieving. My dad has always been the one who showed up for anything related to our education, while my mum handled other aspects of our lives. So graduating without him there felt really empty."

Oluwasunmisinuola continued as she explained the emotions that ran through her at the gravesite of her father during her visit.

She continued:

"I cried my eyes out. It was overwhelming. Standing there in my convocation outfit just made everything real."
"What made it even more emotional was that my sister gave me a convocation card she wrote the way my dad would have written to me. She even added the special name only he used to call me… that alone broke me."
"My dad’s younger brother was there too, and seeing him cry just made everything even heavier. It felt like all of us were feeling his absence at once."
"But in that moment, I also felt like I was able to tell him, ‘I did it.’ Like I was sharing that achievement with him, even if it wasn’t the way I always imagined."

Lastly, she advised individuals who are currently battling the loss of a loved one and are also in pursuit of an academic goal or something of importance.

"I would say be kind to yourself. Grief is not something you rush or get over very easily, and it’s okay to have days where you feel completely off. But also, try to hold on to your ‘why’, the reason you started in the first place."
