She said back then:

"I feel really terrible. Really terrible. I just don't know what to do. My poor daughter has to take me out in the wheelchair sometimes. I have two knee operations. When I walk too much, it hurts, and I feel for my daughter."

Her daughter, Akua, also said they were shocked to have been turned back, noting that they have been using the same documents for years.

Akua said:

"We were shocked. Mum has travelled from the UK to Ghana and back to the UK with the same documents that we have had with us for over 40 years. There has never been a problem ever."

However, a report by Channel 4 News indicates that Hannah Dankwa has finally been allowed back into the UK.

Windrush Commissioner intervenes

UK Windrush Commissioner, Reverend Clive Foster, had intervened in Dankwa's case, leading to an emergency travel document being offered to her within 24 hours.

The Home Office said, per Channel 4:

“We are working closely with Ms Dankwa and welcome her return to the United Kingdom. Each passport application is carefully assessed on its individual merits, based on the evidence provided, and documents are issued once all required checks have been successfully completed.”

The Windrush Commissioner said he was happy Dankwa was home with her family.

He said:

“I am relieved that Hannah Dankwa is now safely back in the UK where she belongs, and able to resume her cancer treatment. From the moment I became aware of her situation, I reached out to Hannah and her family and made it clear to the Home Office that her case must be urgently reviewed on compassionate grounds."

Born in 1944 in Kumasi, Ghana, Hannah was said to have relocated to the UK as part of the Windrush generation. These are people from Commonwealth countries who arrived in the UK before 1973, who were invited to address post-war labour shortages.
