The appeal was contained in a statement issued in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he also cautioned security authorities against taking action against Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, over comments linked to the next general election, Punch reported.
Maharaj Ji described Adeyemo as a consistent advocate for human rights. He said the public reaction to the remarks attributed to the activist had been overstated. He argued that robust opinions on national matters should not invite intimidation or arrest and urged restraint from the Department of State Services.
Call for restraint and dialogue
The cleric maintained that Adeyemo’s record shows a pattern of advocacy rather than provocation. He warned that restricting speech could weaken democratic values and erode justice and fairness. He also urged citizens to stay calm and resist attempts to politicise the controversy, calling for dialogue and tolerance across regions.
The intervention followed calls by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria for security agencies to invite or arrest Adeyemo.
The group cited viral audio and video clips in which the activist was reported to have warned opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, against campaigning in the South West.
HURIWA National Coordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko said, “These statements are dangerous, unlawful and capable of inciting political violence.”
Maharaj Ji reiterated his support for Tinubu’s re election and congratulated the president on his 74th birthday. He praised Tinubu’s experience in global politics and urged Nigerians, especially youths and students, to disregard what he described as an external information war.
He said continuity would help sustain progress and strengthen national unity, adding that patience and cooperation were essential for long term stability and prosperity.
Benue gov’t demolishes Tinubu campaign office
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that barely one week after its grand opening, part of the campaign office of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Makurdi, Benue State, has been demolished by officials of the Benue State Urban Development Board, sparking controversy and political tension in the state.
The building, which also serves as the state secretariat of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu Support Group, had its perimeter fence pulled down during the operation that took place on Thursday, November 6.
The secretariat was inaugurated last week in a ceremony graced by supporters from Benue and neighbouring North-Central states. The event was convened by Dr Mathias Byuan, Executive Director of Housing, Finance, and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority, who also doubles as the National Coordinator of the Tinubu Support Group.
