The claim by the Muslim Rights Concerns (MURIC) that the Bukola Saraki-led Senate is responsible for the current menace of insecurity in Nigeria has sparked serious reactions from the former lawmaker.

Replying MURIC, Saraki's media aide, Ola Onemola, tweeted that the group's comment is propaganda that took the guise of a press statement.

Saraki's media aide recalled that in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari in a letter read out by his principal stated that he had granted ‘anticipatory approval’ for the release of $496,374,470 for the procurement of arms.

He stated that by this move, the president did not follow due process because there is nothing like anticipatory approval.

Onemola noted that before this time, there was a ban from the US government on the sale of arms to Nigeria in compliance with Leahy’s Law following allegations of human rights violations by the military.

He went on to state that the sale was only approved after a delegation of the US Congress met with principal members of the National Assembly in August 2017.

Meanwhile, Saraki had opened up on the failed attempt to remove him as the leader of the upper legislative chamber.

Saraki, a speaker at the Bayelsa State House of Assembly retreat, described the move as one of the darkest moments in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
