The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) has secured the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence operations, following President Muhammadu Buhari’s assent to the bill establishing the institution.

The development was made public by the commandant of the institution, Air Vice Marshal Cletus Nwannebuike Udeagulu, who said AFIT would be able to compete favourably with other specialised institutions globally, as a result of the assent, Vanguard reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Udeagulu also pointed out that the university is one of the few to offer training in aerospace and aviation-related courses up to postgraduate level; a situation which gives it a unique position in Nigeria’s educational landscape.

The commandant expressed his desire to see the university rated among the first ten in Nigeria and Africa at large.

According to Udeagulu, his vision is “to transform AFIT into a world class institution and first choice for the study of aerospace and defence engineering”.

The university’s convocation ceremony is scheduled for Friday, July 27.
