Former Senate president, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has said President Muhammadu Buhari deserves commendation for confering a national honour on the late Chief MKO Abiola.

The Tribune reports that Wabara, who is also the acting secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Buhari’s decision came as a surprise to many Nigerians.

“First and foremost, We have to commend him for doing this. It is a decision well taken. The nation owes a lot to MKO Abiola. Without his sacrifice, many of those who are today enjoying democracy will not be there. He paid the ultimate price for us to have a country. Nothing is too big to honour his memory,” Waraba said.

The former Senate president urged the president to review the cases of all those who have been denied national honours due to political reasons.

“I need to also add that the President needs to review the cases of some of us who were denied national honours due to our former offices.

“I was denied the GCON award because I opposed the Third term agenda and paid a price for that. It is a fact that President Buhari will not be there today if the toxic third term had succeeded,” he said.

He noted that the best way for Buhari to uphold the honour given to Abiola was to ensure that the free and fair scenario that made the June 12 election historic is replicated in 2019.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the federal ministry of justice to take immediate steps to publish the presidential order on June 12, to be observed as Democracy Day in Nigeria in the federal gazette.

This information is contained in a statement by the president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Thursday, June 7.

This was sequel to the president’s directive that effective from 2019, Nigerian Democracy Day, marked every May 29 for the past 18 years be shifted to the June 12.
