  • President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire in the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran
  • The US President disclosed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan facilitated the ceasefire
  • Trump said Iran agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz for the two-week negotiation

President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire in the ongoing war against Iran by Israel and the United States in the Middle East.

This came a few hours before his deadline to attack critical infrastructure across Iran, including bridges and power plants, in what analysts said could have devastating humanitarian consequences.

President Trump said the ceasefire was for two weeks, and it was based on the intervention of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan.

Trump, in a post shared by the White House on Tuesday, April 7, explained that in their discussion, "they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks."

He further noted that the ceasefire is two-sided because the two countries have "met and exceeded all Military objectives," while agreement for a long-term peace deal with Iran and the Middle East is on its way. He confirmed receiving a 10-point proposal from Iran and expressed confidence that it can be worked upon based on their negotiations.

The US president also disclosed that there is agreement on almost all the previous contentions between his country and Iran, adding that the two-week ceasefire would allow factions to finalise it.

Reactions as Trump announces ceasefire in Iran

Meanwhile, Americans have started reacting to Trump's ceasefire deal. Below are some of their reactions:

Deepak Arora said the announcement was not a win:

"Complete, immediate, safe opening… and then a 2-week pause? That’s not strength, that’s blinking first and calling it strategy. One side dictated terms, the other packaged it as a win. Clear as day: humiliation spun as diplomacy, and Iran walks away with leverage."

ServaLux faulted Trump's failure to stick to diplomacy:

"Too bad you couldn't stick to diplomacy. If you had... 15 American Heroes would still be alive. 175 dead school girls would be alive. 1700 civilians wouldn't have been killed. Billions wasted. Global economy wrecked."

LPL criticised Trump:

"What a bluffer! Who would have thought it was as easy as someone asking? The whole world knew you didn’t mean it, and a post like this was on the way."

Grégoire called for the closing of US military bases in the Middle East:

"Awesome! We shouldn't be in MENA at all. Let's close all our costly military bases, and let these hostile foreigners fight among themselves. Israel and Iran can deal with it. MAGA was swept into power on promises of peace, social programs and infrastructure. Time to get to work."
