Adebanjo's political journey started in the 1940s when he joined the Zikist Movement. He later became a founding member of the Action Group (AG) in 1951, aligning with Chief Obafemi Awolowo's vision for Nigeria. As a key figure in the AG, he advocated for federalism, free education, and social welfare. He was also instrumental in the formation of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, where he served as a leader and voice for Yoruba interests.
Adebanjo was a staunch critic of military rule and authoritarianism. He was detained multiple times for his activism, including during the regimes of General Yakubu Gowon and General Sani Abacha. He passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.
