Nigerian Labour Congress

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is Nigeria’s umbrella organization for trade unions, advocating for workers’ rights, fair wages, and better working conditions. It unites workers across sectors to promote social justice and economic equity.

Founded: Established on February 28, 1978, the NLC was formed through the merger of four labour organizations under Decree No. 44 of 1976, unifying Nigeria’s trade union movement to strengthen workers’ representation.

Structure: The NLC is led by a National Executive Council, headed by a President, currently Joe Ajaero. It comprises affiliated unions, state councils in all 36 states and the FCT, and a National Administrative Council. Its headquarters is in Abuja.

Functions: The NLC negotiates with employers and government on workers’ welfare, organizes strikes, and advocates for policies supporting labour rights. It also educates workers and fosters solidarity among unions.
